Heat Results
Newport win the toss, taking gates 1 and 3 in Heat 1.
Heat 01: Kurtz, Simmons, Cottham, Young Ret, 3-3, 3-3, 69.0
Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Todd Kurtz, Tom Young
Comments: IoW gate, but Kurtz has a decent inside line to lead, Simmons quickly into 2nd to challenge. Simmons really winding it on around the outside, but Kurtz too quick, Young miles behind.
Sponsored by www.enjaydesigns.co.uk
Heat 02: White-Williams, Mullins, Andrews, Chessell, 2-4, 5-7, 71.2
Line Up: Rikki Mullins, Luke Chessell, Richard Andrews, James White-Williams
Comments: Handbags at the start between Chessell and Andrews over their grid positions, but when they start its White-Williams who gates, with the IoW in 2nd and 3rd. Chessell looks to have lost power on the 2nd lap and coasts round at the back, before Andrews falls on his own on the 3rd bend, Mullins trying hard at the front and only just missing out on 1st, while Andrews and Chessell were over half a lap behind.
Sponsored by Steve Dixon www.stevedixonphotography.co.uk [/b]
Heat 03: Re-Run: Smith, Starke, Johnson, 5-1, 10-8, 71.3
Line Up: Rob Smith, Paul Starke, Brendan Johnson, Matt Bates
Comments: Smith gates on the outside whilst Starke clamps the returning Johnson on the inside for an IoW 5-1 position, but on the 3rd bend, Matt Bates slides off and Johnson has to lay it down to try to avoid him, which failed as the bikes collided and Johnson came a cropper. Bates up & looking ruefully at his bike. Johnson up & walking to the pits. Bates excluded as the primary cause of the stoppage, re-run with 3 riders only.
- Track grading as seems to be a bit of a rough spot going into third bend. -
Re-Run: Flier from Smith on the outside, Starke tucked into 2nd, so its as you were for the IoW. From the gate.

Heat 04: Re-Run: Warwick, Herne, White-Williams, Chessell Ret, 3-3, 13-11, 70.7
Line Up: Danny Warwick, Luke Chessell, Jay Herne, James White-Williams
Comments: Warwick anticipated the start, Chessell was also wobbling, so it's all 4 back for the restart.
Re-Run: This time White-Williams creeps, but they get away, with Herne gating ahead of Warwick, but Warwick nips up the inside to lead on the back straight, and opens up a hooooge gap to the hornets, with Chessell just as far behind.
Sponsored by Friends of Edinburgh Speedway www.foes.info/
Heat 05: Kurtz, Smith, Starke, Young, 3-3, 16-14, 70.2
Line Up: Rob Smith, Paul Starke, Todd Kurtz, Tom Young
Comments: Even gate, but Kurtz breaks around the outside to lead, IoW content to tuck into minor placings. From the gate.
Sponsored by Splod
Heat 06: Simmons, Herne, White-Williams, Cottham, 3-3, 19-17, 69.7
Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Jay Herne,Richard Andrews James White-Williams
Comments: James White-Williams in for Richard Andrews.
Awful gate from Simmons to hand the Hornets a 5-1 position, but he goes round White-Williams, before going under Herne on back straight to lead! Cottham trying hard at the back to make up ground on White-Williams, but just misses out by a bike length, super ride from Simmons though.

Heat 07: Warwick, Johnson, Mullins, Bates Fell, 4-2, 23-19, 72.1
Line Up: Danny Warwick, Rikki Mullins, Brendan Johnson, Matt Bates
Comments: Johnson away well to lead, but Warwick like a man possessed around the outside of the 3/4th bends to lead, Mullins leading a struggling bates at the back, but Bates fell on the 3rd bend next time round. Confusion then reigns as our starter 5-laps-Les lives up to his name and produces a 5 lapper!
Sponsored by Merlin
Heat 08: Cottham, Young, White-Williams, Chessell, 3-3, 26-22, 71.3
Line Up: Gary Cottham, Luke Chessell, Tom Young, James White-Williams
Comments: Cottham gates, Hornets in minor placings, Chessell struggling. Cottham rode very well to pull away from the Newport pair. From the gate.

Heat 09: Smith, Herne, Starke, Andrews, 4-2, 30-24, 72.1
Line Up: Rob Smith, Paul Starke, Jay Herne, Richard Andrews
Comments: Smith away to lead, while Andrews and Starke are having a ding dong battle at the back behind Herne. Starke past a hairy looking Andrews on the 4th bend, lap 2, before setting after Herne, but just gave himself too much to do after a bad 1st lap.

Heat 10: Simmons, Johnson, Cottham, 4-2, 34-26, Awarded
Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Brendan Johnson, Matt Bates
Comments: Johnson away like a rocket, but Simmons wound it up on outside to go past him on back straight away. Cottham making progress against Johnson, and so is Bates against Cottham, before Bates falls on 1st bend, 3rd lap, and the race is stopped and awarded. Bates stayed down, medics on track. Bates up & walking back to the pits.
Sponsored by
Heat 11: Kurtz, Warwick, Young, Mullins, 2-4, 36-30, 70.7
Line Up: Danny Warwick, Rikki Mullins, Todd Kurtz, Tom Young
Comments: The 2 unbeaten riders away well on the inside, but it's Kurtz that gets the lead ahead of Warwick, whilst Mullins is doing a good job of keeping a wild looking Young at bay. Until the 4th bend, lap 3 that is when he goes round Mullins for 3rd place!
Sponsored by
Heat 12: Re-Run: Smith, Johnson, Andrews, 3-3, 39-33, 72.4
Line Up: Rob Smith, Luke Chessell, Brendan Johnson, Richard Andrews
Comments: Johnson away well again, with Smith in 2nd then Chessell in 3rd, quickly turning into 2 seperate battles this heat, before Chessell stacks it on the 3rd bend, and can't get up in time, rerun with 3 only. Chessell up and ok.
Re-Run: Smith makes the gate this time, and although Johnson cuts back underneath him, Smith pulls away over the next lap. From the gate.

** Short Interval **
Heat 13: Kurtz, Simmons, Warwick, Herne, 3-3, 42-36, 69.0
Line Up: Nick Simmons, Danny Warwick, Todd Kurtz, Jay Herne
Comments: Simmons just gates ahead of Todd, but lifts slightly to give him an easier inside run, which he takes advantage of to pull clear. Herne started to put some pressure on Warwick at the back, but it stayed from the gate.

Heat 14: White-Williams, Bates, Mullins, Starke Ret, 1-5, 43-41, 73.1
Line Up: Paul Starke, Rikki Mullins, Matt Bates, James White-Williams
Comments: White-Williams away into the lead, with the IoW in the minor positions, until Starke runs well wide on the 2nd bend and hits the fence, to retire further around the lap. From bad to worse as Mullins gets overtaken on the 4th bend, lap 3 to concede a 1-5, doh!
Sponsored by Splod [/b]
Heat 15: Re-Run x3: Simmons, Kurtz, Smith, 4-2, 47-43, 69.6
Line-up: Rob Smith, Nick Simmons, Todd Kurtz, Jay Herne
Comments: Isle of Wight taking gates 2 and 4.
Jay Herne with an absolute flier, and rightly called back as unsatisfactory start.
Re-Run: Smith and Kurtz have a lot of elbows going into the first bend, Smith falls and (rightly) it's all 4 back.
Re-Run x2: Kurtz and Smith threaten elbows again, but it's Kurtz who leads, with Herne at the back, but in trying to make some ground up, Herne comes a cropper on the apex on bends 3 and 4 and is excluded, rerun with 3 only (rightly).
Re-Run x3: More elbows from Smith and Kurtz, and it's just enough to let Simmons have a run around the outside to lead!! Smith drops back, but his work is done, Simmons inflicts Kurtz first defeat for 2 or 3 meetings at Smallbrook stadium, and the crowd go wild!

Teams confirmed.
Weather at 7.25pm is looking dry at the moment but after heavy rain last night and drizzle in the day, rain looks to be threatening again... fingers crossed folks!
After heat 15 tonight we have a blind motorcyclist riding a bike around the track, with our chairman in the sidecar. The blind rider has a pillion passenger giving him instructions, but in practice yesterday they crashed into the fence twice!
The motorcyclist is Colin McArthur, who is riding a 1979 Suzuki GS 850 belonging to his friend Dave Richmond who will be giving him instructions on the bike. This is being done to raise funds for RP Fighting Blindness.
And Colin stalled it off the line, going the wrong way around the track... On the back straight now with 'Bat Out of Hell' playing over the tannoy, mounted the grass on the first bend.. but did so well on the first lap, came out for a second. Very impressive & a lot less drama on the second lap! 2 laps, no crashes, no fence incidents, and the chairman Brian Ginders crammed into the sidecar looks very relieved!
