Heat Results
Devils win the toss and take 1 and 3.
Heat 01: Jones, Simmonds, Atkin, Pickard 2-4, 51.78
Line Up: Mark Simmonds,Lee Smethills Jaimie Pickard, Tony Atkin, Mark Jones
Comments: Well before a wheel is turned in anger, Smethills misses the 2 minutes and is discluded. Pickard replaces him. Tight 1st turn between all 4 riders but Jones just held the line to lead exiting bend 2, with his partner Atkin at the back. Pickard who was lying 3rd at the time messed up bend 4 of the opening lap to allow Atkin through for 3rd place. Simmonds tried hard to catch Jones but couldn't get there.

Heat 02: Young, Berwick, Pickard, White-Williams 3-3; 5-7, 55.54
Line Up: Dan Berwick, Jaimie Pickard, Tom Young, James White-Williams
Comments: Even break from all 4 riders and a really competitive 1st turn with Young coming out in front. Young was all over the place out in front and because of that no-one could get passed him! Berwick only half a bikes length away as Young crossed the finish line. White-Williams fell on bend 4 of lap 1.

Heat 03: Kurtz, Starke, Webster, Smethills 2-4; 7-11, 52.50
Line Up: Paul Starke,R/R Lee Smethills, Tim Webster, Todd Kurtz
Comments: Smethills takes the r/r ride for the Devils. Hornets gated and off. Webster though got turn 4 of the opening lap all wrong and nearly hit the fence allowing Starke through, who then tried to catch Kurtz but couldn't make up the ground on the Aussie who looked stylish up front. Craneman thinks Kurtz will be tough to beat tonight on that showing. Smethills was on his spare bike after his earlier problems with his number 1 bike and was very poor at the back.

Heat 04: White-Williams, Atkin, Stephens, Pickard 1-5; 8-16, 54.10
Line Up: Seemond Stephens, Jaimie Pickard,R/R Tony Atkin, James White-Williams
Comments: Atkin is the Hornets r/r. What a race!! White-Williams got a flyer but the ref let it go and by the first turn he was already over a bikes length clear. The Devils filled the minor places with Atkin at the back. Stephens chased White-Williams but refused to leave the white line, making it easy for White-Williams to block him. On the final turn Atkin flew around the boards to pass both Devils who were hugging the white line to take 2nd place, shame Stephens hadn't thought of that whilst chasing White-Williams. Brilliant stuff though from the Hornets skipper!!

Heat 05: Starke, Atkin, Jones, Berwick 3-3; 11-19, 52.19
Line Up: Paul Starke,R/R Dan Berwick, Tony Atkin, Mark Jones
Comments: Berwick is the Devils r/r. Starke gated and clamped Jones on the 1st turn. The Devils rider then sped away down the back straight to win by a distance. In Cranemans opinion he is the 1st Devil who has really gone for it out of the gate and it paid dividends. Atkin is riding the outside of the track and finding some good lines out there, the Devils need to follow suit!
Sponsored by Splod
Heat 06: Kurtz, Simmonds, Smethills, Young 3-3; 14-22, 52.97
Line Up: Mark Simmonds, Lee Smethills,R/R Todd Kurtz, Tom Young
Comments: Kurtz is the r/r for the Hornets. Simmonds gated but a superb 1st and 2nd turn from Kurtz as he went around everyone to lead down the back straight. He then clamped Simmonds on the following turn which ended the Plymouth riders challenge. Young fell bend 4 of lap 1.
Sponsored by
Heat 07: Stephens, Kurtz, Webster, Pickard 3-3; 17-25, 53.43
Line Up: Seemond Stephens,Dan Berwick Jaimie Pickard, Tim Webster, Todd Kurtz
Comments: Pickard replaces Berwick for Plymouth. From the gate for the Devils skipper. Kurtz tried to go around him early on but couldn't quite get there, so intelligently sat in for 2nd. Really mature ride from the young Hornet who knowing his team are in front didn't take any silly risks. Pickard fell and re-mounted bend 4 of lap 2.

Heat 08: Re-run: Jones, Pickard, Smethills, White-Williams(fell) 3-3; 20-28, 53.25
Line Up: Lee Smethills, Jaimie Pickard, Mark Jones, James White-Williams
Comments: All 4 back as White-Williams jumped the start. Re-run: Hornets gated and led for the first lap, it stayed that way until bend 1 of lap 2 when Pickard started to apply pressure on White-Williams who then promptly slid off into the fence. He quickly got up and off the track to allow the race to continue though. Can't see the Devils getting back in this!

Heat 09: Re-run: Starke, Stephens, Young 5-1; 25-29, 53.87
Line Up: Paul Starke,R/R Seemond Stephens, R/R Tim Webster, Tom Young
Comments: Stephens is the r/r for Plymouth and Webster is the Hornets r/r. Stopped after Webster takes a tumble. He had gated and was leading from the Devils pair and didn't look like he was going to be caught until he got bend 4 of lap 2 all wrong and went over the top of his bike and into the fence. The Devils pair did well to miss him but his partner Young didn't and clattered into him. Remarkably both up and ok. Webster discluded from the re-run. Re-run: Devils gated and that was that. All 3 well strung out there was a postcodes distance between them!

Heat 10: Re-run: Kurtz, Simmonds, Webster, Smethills 2-4; 27-33, 53.25
Line Up: Mark Simmonds, Lee Smethills, Tim Webster, Todd Kurtz
Comments: Stopped after Simmonds crashes into the fence on turn 2 of the 1st lap. The crowd seem split with some saying Webster rode him out, others saying he just slid off. The ref's call is the one that counts though and he has called all 4 back. Hornets had made the best of the gate. Simmonds up and walking back to the pits after a brief sit down on the track. Slight delay whilst Simmonds sorts himself out for the re-run. Re-run: Kurtz rode a great 1st and 2nd turn to keep Simmonds wide. By doing so he made a huge hole for Webster to go through but he refused to make the move. Smethills was about 3 days behind at the back and was simply awful!!

Heat 11: Stephens, Atkin, Jones, Berwick 3-3; 30-36, 53.93
Line Up: Seemond Stephens, Dan Berwick, Tony Atkin, Mark Jones
Comments: From the gate for Stephens who rode a very clever bend to stop Jones coming around the outside. Atkin kept the Devils skipper honest though.

Heat 12: Re-run: Starke, White-Williams 3-2; 33-38, AWD
Line Up: Paul Starke,Jaimie Pickard, Tim Webster, Tom Young James White-Williams
Comments: White-Williams replaces Young for the Hornets. Stopped. Plenty of action on the opening couple of bends had White-Williams go from 2nd to last. However as Starke and Webster battled up front on bend 3, Pickard fell and is therefore discluded. Re-run: Great battle up front between Starke and Webster. Webster had gated but Starke passed him, only for Webster to re-pass Starke. Going into the final lap though, Webster under pressure from Starke ran into bend 1 too hot and had to bin it. Red lights on immediately and race is awarded with Webster discluded.

Heat 13: Stephens, Atkin, Simmonds, Jones 4-2; 37-40, 53.78
Line Up: Mark Simmonds, Seemond Stephens, Tony Atkin,R/R Mark Jones
Comments: Jones is the final r/r for the Hornets. Great race!! Devils gated so Craneman assumed it would be a team riding exhibition and a 5-1, but Atkin wasn't having any of it! He chased the pair and rounded Simmonds on bend 4 of lap 2 before setting after Stephens. Meanwhile Simmonds stayed on Atkins tail. Over the finish line you could have thrown a blanket over the front 3. Great race from the old timers, I mean veterans!

Heat 14: Kurtz, Starke, Young, Pickard(ret) 2-4; 39-44, 53.34
Line Up:R/R Paul Starke, Dan Berwick Jaimie Pickard, Todd Kurtz, James White-Williams Tom Young
Comments: Starke is the r/r and Pickard replaces Berwick for the Devils and Young replaces White-Williams for the Hornets. Kurtz gated and had a good battle with Starke up front. But Kurtz always seemed to be in control and the Plymouth man couldn't catch him. At the back Pickard fell on bend 3 of lap 1 when 3rd. He re-mounted but later retired.

Heat 15: Re-run: Kurtz, Starke, Atkin 2-4; 41-48, 53.22
Line-up: Paul Starke,Seemond Stephens, Todd Kurtz, Tony Atkin
Comments: Devils won the toss and take 1 and 3. Stopped. Tough 1st bend as Stephens ends up in the fence. The race continued with Starke leading and Kurtz challenging. But on the 3rd turn of the 1st lap Kurtz then fell. Referee then puts the red lights on but only discludes Stephens despite Kurtz not being under power at the time of the red lights going on! Crowd not happy, Stephens up and ok, just about sums up another miserable night for the Devils!! Re-run: Unbelievable race! Simply brilliant!! Starke and Kurtz gated with Starke on the inside and Kurtz on the outside. They literally were side by side, shoulder to shoulder for the entire race. One bend Starke led, the next it was Kurtz, simply breathtaking, if either had put a foot wrong both probably would have been in the fence! However on bend 3 of the final lap Kurtz just got in front to hold off Starke on the run to the line! Well done Newport who thoroughly deserve their win!!
