CRUMP TAKES VICTORY AT NEWCASTLE
Newcastle - January 3, 2007: Jason Crump started his 2007 Linddales Labour Hire Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship Series in fine form at Newcastle Showground this evening taking a superb victory over Steve Johnston and British Champion Scott Nicholls and the hugely impressive South Australian, Rory Schlein.
The big story though was the performance of defending and nine time Australian Champion Leigh Adams. After winning his first heat, he suffered two DNFs whilst leading - one in his third heat throwing a chain and in his final heat an ignition box failure. His second heat, Leigh finished second to Schlein, who had already claimed the scalp of World Champion Jason Crump in the first round. Adams salvaged fifth place in the meeting after winning the B-Final from Chris Holder, young rising star Tom Hedley and Victorian, Mark Lemon.
The loss to Schlein was the result of a 'wardrobe malfunction' according to the World Champion.
"The truth is I was wearing a new racesuit and when I dropped the clutch, the crotch split open!" Crump laughed. "After that I was fine, the race track was great and it was fantastic to be riding back in Australia once more."
Crump went on to win the remaining races in comfortable style.
Schlein, Hedley and Johnston were the stars of the show. Schlein brought the capacity crowd to its feet with his victory over Crump, only to back that up with a win over Adams - the two biggest scalps in the tournament.
Hedley made a stunning Championship debut, qualifying for the B-Final, impressing all on hand with his skill, particularly after he qualified through the qualifying meeting on December 30.
Johnston put in arguably his finest performance on home soil - the charismatic West Australian nabbing second place on the line from Nicholls - who went his first three races undefeated.
"It was a great way to start the Championship," said an elated Johnston. "There are four rounds still to go, so I'm taking it in my stride at the moment and we'll see what happens from there, but I'm stoked with second place."
Nicholls - who has only been in the country for four days - was very happy with his performance.
"I'm extremely happy to start the Linddales Championships in this way," said Nicholls. "I felt a bit vulnerable at times actually. The young guys here in Australia are just riding so well."
The crowd were witness to some insane racing from the 16 riders throughout the 22 races. The track started out quite slick before fining up to produce some of the best Speedway seen in Australia.
Local boy, Jason Doyle had a mixed night, impressing with seven points at the conclusion of his heats.
